A young woman from the Dominican Republic, Yuleidy, is rewriting her own story of perseverance and success. A journey that started with the dreams of a new beginning in a foreign land has evolved into a story of hope, growth, and empowerment, not just for herself but for her family and community.
Yuleidy came to Newark where, for years, she worked as a hairdresser, honing her craft while simultaneously juggling the demands of motherhood. But as any immigrant knows, the road to success can often feel like an uphill battle, filled with personal and professional challenges.
Everything changed for Yuleidy when she registered her oldest child for pre-k at La Casa de Don Pedro (LCDP). It was there that Yuleidy first learned about the Child Development Associate (CDA) credentialing scholarship opportunity through the organization’s Workforce Development Program. This program, designed to help people pursue careers in child development, offered a path to obtain a nationally recognized certification that would open doors to new professional opportunities.
Motivated by her desire for self-improvement and the well-being of her family, Yuleidy took a leap of faith. She accepted a job as a janitor at LCDP, allowing her to stay close to her children while working towards and studying for her CDA. The journey wasn’t easy — balancing work, family, and school required determination and hard work. At times, Yuleidy felt overwhelmed and even considered giving up, but the support she received from her family and friends, including her community at LCDP, kept her going. Her coworkers and mentors were always there, offering words of encouragement and reminding her of the brighter future she was working towards.
With the support of LCDP’s dedicated staff, Yuleidy excelled in her studies. She completed the coursework for the CDA, gaining valuable insights into child development, education, and the importance of nurturing young minds. The hands-on field experience she gained at LCDP gave her a deeper understanding of the impact she could have on children’s lives. After a year of hard work, Yuleidy passed her CDA exam and earned her certification.
Yuleidy’s achievement is a testament to her resilience, hard work, and the power of opportunity. As a certified child development professional and a role model in her community, Yuleidy’s career options have expanded, and she contributes to the growth and development of children in a more impactful way. Her success is not just her own; it’s a success for her family, her community, and the future generations she is now equipped to positively influence.
Yuleidy even accepted a job at LCDP, the very place that gave her the tools and opportunities to transform her life. Her new role allows her to continue contributing to her community, and she remains deeply grateful for the unwavering support she received throughout her journey — especially during the moments when she wanted to give up.
Yuleidy’s story is a powerful reminder of how education, support, and determination can transform lives. Yuleidy’s journey wasn’t just about earning a certification; it is about breaking barriers, setting an example for her children, and proving to herself that she could accomplish anything she set her mind to, and, as she shared, “with God at the forefront”.
It also underscores the transformative power of workforce development programs like the one offered by La Casa de Don Pedro. By providing people with the tools and resources they need to succeed, these programs open doors to better futures, one story at a time. We are exceedingly proud of Yuleidy and wish her all the best.
