Despite the challenges presented by the coronavirus closures, La Casa’s Afterschool Enrichment Program along with the La Casa/McKinley’s Civic Learning and Engagement Program continue to remain in operation.

The Enrichment Program is assisting students with schoolwork remotely and providing daily virtual crafts, exercises, and social activities. The Civic Learning and Engagement Program has been meeting with students remotely and providing educational and enriching activities. Students from both programs have been able to participate in the programs while practicing social distancing. It has been challenging to transition from in-person to virtual programs, but the instructors and program coordinators’ commitment and creativity have helped make the transition smooth and effective.

The program isn’t just supporting students, but instructors also reach out to parents to check in on them regularly, and to inquire about any needs the families may be experiencing. Staff are referring families to COVID-19 testing centers, food assistance programs, and are providing information about unemployment benefits, the importance of taking the 2020 Census, applying for SNAP benefits, and a myriad of other services they seek.

With staff this dedicated, Newark residents are in good hands with La Casa by their side.
