Food is more than nutrition. It is culture, comfort, and dignity. And for too many families in Newark’s Lower Broadway neighborhood, consistent access to fresh, healthy, and culturally familiar groceries has been out of reach for far too long.
La Casa de Don Pedro is honored to announce the opening of the Lower Broadway Community Grocery Store, a new initiative designed to change that, one family at a time.
The store is stocked with a wide variety of essential food items chosen specifically to reflect the needs and preferences of the communities we serve. Shelves carry pantry staples, frozen foods, dairy products, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables, including produce that is familiar to the Latin American, Caribbean, and immigrant families who make up a significant portion of our neighborhood. This is not a generic food distribution model. It is a grocery store built with our community in mind, one where families can walk in, make choices that align with their traditions and their health, and leave with food that feels like home.
The store was created to address food insecurity in a way that centers dignity and agency. There are no lengthy applications, no eligibility interviews, and no stigma. There is simply a welcoming space where community members can access what their families need.
Food insecurity in Newark and Essex County remains significantly above state and national averages, compounded by high housing costs, limited access to full-service grocery stores in certain neighborhoods, and the economic pressures facing working families. The Lower Broadway Community Grocery Store is LCDP’s direct response to that reality, grounded in the belief that access to healthy food is not a privilege but a foundation for everything else we work toward, stable housing, strong children, healthy families, and thriving communities.
This initiative builds on La Casa de Don Pedro’s longstanding commitment to addressing food access as part of a comprehensive, integrated approach to community well-being. Alongside our Family Success Centers, our seasonal Farmers Market at El Patio de La Casa, and our summer meal programs for children, the Community Grocery Store adds a year-round, community-centered resource that reflects who we are and what we believe every Newark family deserves.
