About Us

El Barrio Wellness is a community-based mental health clinic founded by La Casa de Don Pedro, a trusted pillar of Newark since 1972, in partnership with Bienestar Wellness Group.

We understand our community because we are the community, and we exist to serve the people of Newark and Essex County with compassion, dignity, and respect.

For over 50 years, La Casa de Don Pedro has served and been led by Black and Latinx communities, advocating for justice, love, solidarity, excellence, and belonging. El Barrio Wellness continues that legacy by offering high-quality, affordable, and accessible mental health care—including individual, couple, and family therapy—grounded in the Liberation Health model.

Our mission is to break the stigma surrounding mental health in communities of color while honoring our cultural traditions and lived experiences. This is what wellness looks like, for us, by us.

Liberation Health Model

The Liberation Health Model is a social-work / clinical framework that:

  • Understands individuals’ and families’ problems not in isolation but as embedded within economic, political, cultural, and historical conditions
  • Uses a Liberation Health Triangle to map how personal, cultural, and institutional factors interact to produce distress or dysfunction
  • Seeks to help people identify and deconstruct dominant worldview messages (e.g. about race, class, gender, individualism) that blame them or constrain them
  • Supports clients to rescue historical memory, gain agency, and take action (individually, collectively, institutionally) as part of the healing process
  • Is explicitly oriented toward liberation from internal and external oppression, connecting personal wellbeing with social justice goals

Payment and Insurance Information:

We offer a sliding scale for our fees, ranging from $35 to $150 per session, based on your income and insurance. This includes individuals and families with income levels from 100% to 400% of the federal poverty guidelines.
